I don't know much about this huge decorative stoneware plate

which makes it really pop

certainly it was a folk creation--maybe

and the brass looks very much to me like  melted down shell casings

in absence of a face

What I know is that he was from New Jersey (b. 1929) but spent a good part of the 1950s in Mexico, after which he briefly attended Cooper Union. He was gay, and estranged from his family, and, it seems increasingly mentally ill, with not much record of him
